British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
